INT316 Final Research Project
The final assignment is a project that comprises 40% of your final grade, due on 30 April. It should focus on a social movement or form of protest of your own choosing that incorporates concepts, arguments, and insights from the course into your analysis. I recommend that you relate your topic to a country or geographical region of your choice, otherwise it can become too vast. It is also helpful to root the wider issue with one specific and well elaborated case study eg. music and protest in the Arab Spring. If you want to focus on an issue that is very different to ones we have covered, please clear it with me first.
Whatever topic you choose, you can collect data in a variety of ways: by interviewing activist(s), analyzing newspaper articles, social media or activist websites/resources about a specific topic. Your project should have some kind of argument and include your own perspectives rather than simply giving us Wikipedia factoids.
You need a good title. You also need to include three or more sources in your written submission – 1 of which should be academic (ie. academic journal article or academic book). The others can be from a non-academic source or can also be academic. The academic source does not need to be one of your readings, but it certainly can be. You can also include more than two sources; this is just a guideline.
Choosing Your Final Output
Your final project output can take several forms:
Option 1: A 3000-word paper that makes a well-crafted argument on a social movement of your choice.
Option 2: A creative project (such as an academic poster project, film, artwork etc.) that is accompanied by a 1000-word reflection paper, which should elaborate on your research topic in more detail. If you choose to do a virtual poster, it should be a mixture of a brief text (300-800 words) combined with tables, graphs, pictures, and other presentation formats, as helpful. I recommend using Adobe Acrobat, Photo Shop or PowerPoint. I have included a PowerPoint template on Canvas of an academic poster I made that you are welcome to use by replacing my text with your own. I have also included examples of other students’ past projects. Please use these as helpful guides and inspiration.
Whatever option you choose, your research project should be an individual one, but we will work through the research process together. I am on hand to provide critical feedback and helpful support.
UPCOMING Dates:
By 21 April: post an approx. 150-word outline of your topic focus and the structure of your final project (15 marks).
By 25 April: One goal of this project is to create a supportive community, even though it is an individual project. You will be paired with one other student on the course and asked to provide
helpful comments of approx. 150-200 words (15 marks). Feedback questions are available on the Canvas discussion group to help you consider different points of critique.
By 30 April: Final full submissions (70 marks).
Criteria for the final project evaluation • Formatting (10 pts): appropriate and consistent use of headings; consistent and thorough citation; complete and properly formatted bibliography; title that is reflective of the text content. • Quality of prose (25 pts): clear and grammatically-corrected sentences; clear and compelling use of qualitative examples, illustrations, images and/or quantitative data. Note: Writing style should be authentic; please make use of your own voice. • Use of course material (40 pts): incisive use of an extensive academic literature; correct use of concepts; compelling description of theories and methods; identification and use of appropriate data sources; identification and use of comparative cases if applicable. • Creativity (25 pts): original argument; drawing of interesting and unusual, but apposite, associations or comparisons; nuanced interpretation of facts, events, theories, policies, etc.
Note that:
• 3000 words means 3000 words of text; so, it does not include title pages (which are unnecessary), images, figures, tables, citations, or works cited. You can be up to 10% over or under the word guidelines.
• Your papers should be typed in 12-point Times New Roman font, double-spaced, with standard margins on top, bottom, and right and left sides. All citations must be in either MLA, Chicago or APLA format. I am happy with whatever style you use, as long as it is consistent.
• Submitted to me through Canvas by midnight of the deadline. Grades are due shortly thereafter so I’m afraid I cannot accept late submissions!
