comprehension of chapter topics, and to evaluate organizational processes via critical
thinking skills and written communication.
Students must prepare an essay (three pages, minimum) discussing some aspects of the
readings for the week. One topic will be provided. Papers must be delivered
electronically to the instructor on or before 11:59 pm, Wednesday April 28, 2021.
1. The assignment should be double-spaced and written in 12-point font
2. The assignment must be a minimum of THREE pages. Points will be
automatically deducted for essays shorter than two pages
3. Your essay must be clear and concise. Your arguments must be fully supported
with details of your experiences in the class this semester
4. There are no page limits for the assignment

Topic Bookends – Your Assessment of Our Democracy
Bookends On the first day of class, I believed that “the state of our union is strong.” Many of may have
disagreed, to say the least. Yes, it is clear that you came into the course with your assessment
of the current state of the country, our state, our city and state. As a teacher and scholar of
American Government, the textbook was written to engage students in both the process and
the policy outcomes of United States government. The textbook is somewhat an updated lens
through which we examined the theoretical and structural foundations of American democracy
and the resulting political process that demands an active and informed citizenry.
We peeled back the layers of our political system to expose its inner workings and examined
how competing interests can both facilitate and block the people’s will. In doing so, we used
the conceptual framework of Gateways.

Today’s groups that were formerly underrepresented in American politics and society, such
as African-Americans and second- and third-generation Latinos, are a powerful force in our
government. It was my hope that this course awakened you and motivate you not only to
learn about politics but to also participate actively throughout every stage of their lives.
Reflect on the historical events occurring this semester and this and last year: the COVID-19
Pandemic; the cancelation of in-person classes to 100 percent online; the murder of George
Floyd and the resulting mass protests, not only in the country by around the world; a very
bitter and divisive election campaign and the election of Joe Biden as President and Senator
Kamala Harris as Vice President of the United States. As of today, April 20, 2021, former
President Trump has not conceded the election and refuses to do so.
With this in mind, provide “Bookends,” of the course, that is, on one end, provide your initial
assessment and thoughts of our government and democracy before the first day of class; on
the other end, provide your thoughts and assessment of our government and democracy, now
that you have completed this course in American Government. In your writings, keep the
