Do not panic if your post hasn’t been graded. I am prompted to grade a post once there is a post and two replies. But I just wanted to comment on what I’ve read. Some of you have had amazing posts with great reflections, applications, connections and replies. Some of you, on the other hand, seem to be very conditioned to do post using a set algorithm – (1) provide overview of subject (2) provide evidence to support your view, (3) tread lightly with personal opinions. STOP IT!
Your post is not a formal essay! Your post should be your personal reflections and gut reactions, positive and negative. Make your post more like your replies. You all have awesome replies to each other and that’s because you are connecting to your classmates on a personal level. I blame the education system for conditioning you to regurgitate information. PLEASE, stop being afraid of making a mistake or getting it wrong.
The Discussion Board posts are supposed to come from YOU, not a repeat of what’s in the video. This is an opportunity to express your opinions, reactions and connections to the material. If you are struggling with this, write your post like you’re talking to your partner or best friend.
READ the chapter first! This is important so you can apply the Ted Talk to the chapter. For example, 3 Clues to understanding the brain, gave great information to give you another frame of reference to understanding the role of the parietal, temporal and frontal lobes, the amygdala and the limbic system, etc. This is the type of connection I want you to see.
WATCH the Talk in its entirety. Don’t just watch the beginning and the end because you will miss some of the most important points of the Talk.
I know many of you are high need achievers and you pride yourself on “getting it right”. Please, let your guard down, loosen up and feel free to write whatever comes to mind as long as it’s respectful and non-offensive. If you did not receive full credit, please look at the comments in the rubric for my feedback. If you’re still not sure, look at the post from Ryan D, Heather B, Jeremy V, Halli B, Justin H – all of them have very different writing styles but answer the three questions for each Ted Talk.
