Cultural anthropologists study a variety of social identities that play important roles in how an individual moves through society. Different cultures place different values on social identities, and an individual’s various social identities therefore impact how they are perceived and treated by others, the expectations other’s have of them, and the kinds of opportunities they have in life.
In this class, we discussed a range of social identities including race, ethnicity, gender, sexuality, class, and religion, but there are a number of identities including political affiliation, subcultural affiliations, etc. This essay asks you to consider the different social identities you hold and assess how they have impacted your life and your position in your culture. This essay is meant to be reflective, but you will also be asked to draw on at least two outside ACADEMIC sources to evaluate how your own observations about your social identities fit into patterns identified by social scientists. For example, if you have noticed that your social class impacted the quality of your education as a child, try finding a study that links social class and educational quality or academic achievement. Don’t forget that everyone’s personal identity is an intersection of a variety of social identities and these intersections can play an important role in how you move through society. Some of your identities may be privileged while others may not be, but all identities influence you and society’s perceptions of you.
Assignment
Please write 2-3 pages reflecting on your social identities and how those identities have influenced how you are perceived, the opportunities you may or may not have been given, and how you position yourself in the world. You can focus on one or two key identities that may be especially central to what you define as your own personal identity, but I encourage you to think intersectionally, and to consider multiple identities at once. You should use at least 2 outside sources, as well as the textbook and other class readings, to inform your analysis of your own social identities.

Introduction (1 paragraph)
Introduce your various social identities, and specify which ones you will be focusing on in the paper. State the key themes you will be focusing on (i.e. I will be discussing how Identities A and B have impacted my life in X,Y, and Z ways)
Body Paragraphs (1-2 pages)
If you are focusing on multiple identities it may be helpful to devote one or two paragraphs to each one (i.e. Identity A influenced X,Y,Z and Identity B influenced X,Y,Z). Alternatively, if you are focusing on how one primary identity has impacted you, it may be helpful to devote one or two paragraphs to each part of your life that has been influenced by that identity (i.e. friendships, education, jobs, societal expectations).
This is the section where you should be incorporating your academic sources and any information from the lectures or textbooks you are drawing on. How do your experience relate to patterns that have been identified in anthropological research?
Conclusion (1 paragraph)
Summarize the key themes of your paper in a few sentences, and reflect on the exercise. Did it make you realize anything about your social identities and their effect on your life that you haven’t before?
