Final Research Paper

 

This final paper asks you to create something new and innovative such as the design for a new video game, or graphic short story, or even a consumer product that is inspired by one or more of your transformative texts.

 

This paper is your pitch to investors or executives who might sponsor your product.

 

Your task is to have a full understanding of the texts you chose to inspire your product as well as the supporting data you will need to research your design, including your audience, market, and competition.

 

You must do some outside research using our library and its databases, bringing to your argument primary and secondary sources. They will help you develop and support your central argument (thesis).  They will help inspire you.

You may develop your own topic but here is a list of possible topics:

• Designing a video game [for example, combine ideas from The Road and the Inferno]
• Creating a new guide to happiness based on the ideas in Candide and Siddhartha
• Designing graphic short story [for example, based on two or more of Dante’s adventures in Inferno; or Macbeth’s encounters with the weird sisters]
• Creating an action or animated film [any of our readings would work]
• The design for a new theatrical interpretation [Macbeth or Candide]
• A new podcast series based on transformative texts

 

Deadlines: A topic statement and outline (1 page) and bibliography (at least 6 sources, including both the transformative texts and outside research you will use) is due on Friday, April 16 on Brightspace.

 

Drafts are due before Friday, April 23. If your last name ends with A-I, email your draft as a Word document to Professor Zook; last name ends in K-Z, please email your draft as a Word document to Mr. Chan.

 

The final polished version is due on Wednesday, April 28.

 

Format: Your research paper should be 5 to 6 pages, double spaced (TNR-12), plus a bibliography. Please use APA (American Psychology Association) citation style. For APA, see among other style guides, https://www.mendeley.com/guides/apa-citation-guide

The Basic Outline:

 

• Introductory paragraph: Grab the audience. Briefly state the problem and your solution.

 

• A more in-depth discussion of problem with the research that supports the fact that there is a problem

 

• A more in-depth discussion of your solution and the power of your transformative texts and a sample of what your guidebook, game, podcast, etc. would look like

 

• A discussion of likely audience or buyers with supporting evidence

 

• A powerful conclusion that states why this is such a timely innovation that the world needs now
