The purpose of this paper is to develop a genogram and ecomap for a particular family. It identifies the relationship between family members. Types of family environmental resources are delineated. Each identified resource is related to the family based on relationship strength and energy flow. Suggestions for improving relationships and positive energy within the family are discussed.
Based on the results of the ecomap and genogram developed using the information from Kaakinen, Coehio, Steele, Tabacco, & Hanson (2015), it is noted the Monroe family consists of a husband, wife, and three children. SM and husband DM are senior citizens; however, SM still works part time. They have three grown children who live outside the home. Two of the children are married with children. One child is living with a significant other who has a child from a previous marriage.
Wright and Leahey (2012), describe how to prepare a family for an interview. After utilizing the information from Wright and Leahey for the interview, the findings from the Monroe family interview follows.
SM has a strong relationship with her fellow workers and her work is a strong support. Their relationship with their children is strong as is their relationship with their friends. However, the relationship with their son in-law is tense and results in significant stressors for both of them. They also have a neighbor who is unfriendly, and this causes tension that has an additional unwanted stressor.
According to SM they unfortunately do not have a strong relationship with the church; she wishes that was different, but her husband does not share her religious attachment. Thus this is somewhat stressful for her.
Their energy is pulled toward their family since they help babysit and visit grandchildren as often as possible. This is a positive energy and more than welcomed. Their energy is also pulled toward their son in-law since he has been unemployed for several years and their daughter is the breadwinner of their family who is supporting their two children, and financially responsible. This is a significant stressor in the form of anger and frustration toward the son in-law and worry about their daughter’s health and well-being.
Overall, SM and her family are doing well with strong family and friend relationships. SM has a strong relationship with her employees at work. She could benefit with revitalizing her relationship with her church and perhaps should consider going to church without her husband. The stressor from the neighbor does not appear to be causing any negative energy; however, perhaps SM and DM might try to communicate more with the neighbor and improve relationships with her. The son in-law tension is a problem that creates negative energy and should be resolved for the sake of her daughter and grandchildren. Perhaps communicating with him in a non-threatening environment would help the situation. Nursing intervention often relies on the circularity of knowledge, translation, and practice (Kolbrun Svavarsdottir et al., 2015). The Monroe family might well benefit from a role play in which members practice therapeutic communication techniques they would use with the son in-law prior to actually interacting with him once they come to terms with the importance of reducing stressors and reducing negative energies.

While the family is currently healthy, the grandson has chronic stress induced asthma, which is another important reason why the family should try to engage in more therapeutic communication and reduce the current negative energy.
In conclusion, with respect to the Monroe family, nursing intervention strategies should focus on reducing negative stressors through information on interpersonal communication techniques, anger management, and promoting positive relationships. While there is more positive than negative energy, the latter significantly impacts several members. Without intervention, the family may become dysfunctional. This may lead to childhood issues that could affect the mental health of the grandchildren. The aspect of religious needs from SM should be resolved as well.
