Potential Themes in A Raisin in the Sun:

  • The Intersection of Race and Poverty
  • The Importance of Dreams
  • The Importance of Family
  • Assimilation and Colonialism

Potential Topics in A Streetcar Named Desire:

  • Fantasy versus Reality
  • Violence and Hypermasculinity/Male Chauvinism
  • Blanche’s Sexuality – Why?
  • The Importance of Social Status

Essay Requirements:

  • Essay should be 3 full pages in length + Works Cited Page
  • MLA Format – 12 point Times New Roman Font, double spaced, 1” margins, and all citation should be in MLA format (See Purdue OWL). Proper In text-citations for the play and scholarly source are worth 5 possible points, and Works Cited are worth another 5. That is the difference of a letter grade, so please double check you are correctly citing all sources, the play and your scholarly source. Citations should include Author’s last name and page number. For example:
    (Hansberry 10)
    (Williams 14)
***No commas between author and page number. Last name and page number only.****
  • One scholarly source properly cited in text and on the Works Cited page (a book or journal article that has been peer reviewed). Quote or paraphrase the source in your essay and cite it.
  • Write in the literary present tense and in 3rd person.

Tips:

  • Your essay necessarily cannot just consist of plot summary.
  • Be sure to properly punctuate the title of the literary work. Shorter works, such as short stories, poems, song titles, articles, single episodes of television shows, and one-act plays go in quotations marks (“Boys and Girls” by Alice Munro). Longer works, such as plays that are longer than one act, novels, entire television series, films, should be italicized (A Raisin in the Sun by Lorraine Hansberry).
  • Your essay should necessarily quote, paraphrase, or summarize elements of the story as support for your argument and be properly cited (MLA).
  • Your essay should be written in present tense when illustrating the events available in the novel, book or article.
  • Formally written essays should be written in 3rd person (he, she, they), not 1st (I, me, or 1st plural, we, our),and definitely not 2nd(you, your/commands with implied you as subject of the sentence).
  • A quick and concise introduction paragraph should be added for the clear understanding; it should NOT summarize the entire story in extensive detail, but it should quickly let the reader know necessary details that are important for understanding the essay.
  • All sources should be introduced in your paper, all quotations should be integrated into sentences, and all facts and quotations should be cited with in-text citations. No floating quotes/standalone quotes. With print sources, in-text citations are typically the author’s last name and the page number—as in (Smith 12)—except when the author’s name is already given in the sentence; in that case and in the case that your essay is about a single source, you only give the page number. Always tell us who is “talking” in the sentence with the fact or quotation: no floating quotes! Keep in mind that failure to cite facts and the words of others is a form of plagiarism.
    • For all forms of MLA citation, refer to Purdue OWL’s MLA Citation information, or your textbook.
    • See the Cheatsheets provided for you on Blackboard in the Week 11 Content Folder

In-text Citations

In-text Citation for a Short Story or Play from Our Anthology:

Bobby Ann Mason’s “Shiloh” represents Norman Jean as masculine from the beginning of the story, “Leroy Moffitt’s wife, Norma Jean, is working on her pectorals” (645).

Author Not Named in the Sentence:

Norma Jean is represented as a masculinized character from the beginning of the story, “Leroy Moffitt’s wife, Norma Jean, is working on her pectorals” (Mason 645).

Note: Once you have cited a source using the author’s name, you only need to cite the page number until you change sources again.

Note: Cite short stories using page numbers.

Note: Cite plays using page numbers.

Long Quotes:

If you quote four or more lines of the text, do block quotes:

Mason represents Norman Jean as masculinized from the beginning of the story:

Leroy Moffitt’s wife, Norma Jean, is working on her pectorals. She lifts

three-pound barbells to warm-up, then progresses to a twenty-pound barbell.

Standing with her legs apart, she reminds Leroy of Wonder Woman. I’d give

anything if I could just get these muscles to where they’re really hard. (645)

Note: The indent for the poem’s lines is a “hanging indent.” You do it by putting your cursor at the beginning of the line and entering “Ctrl Tab.” OR in WORD, Control A to select all => Format => Paragraph => Special => Hanging.

Note: no quotation marks are used for the block quote. Also, note there is a period at the end of the block quote and then there is the page cite in parenthesis.
