  Due 4/19/21 – Post your first draft essay on Discussion board by the time your class starts. Participate in Peer Review on Discussion board using questions provided. The entire class will meet for peer review on this day and all days following for peer review as needed.
  – (50 points– 25 points for turning in a first draft on time, 25 for participation in Peer Review)
• Final Draft due 4/25/21– (100 points & this essay is worth 20% overall grade)
• Bonus: Conference with me or submit to the Writing lab by 4/23/21 @ 4:00 PM- 25 pts

Prompt: Choose one of the two plays we read for this unit: A Raisin in the Sun or A Streetcar Named Desire.  Argue a theme of the play by analyzing the text and showing how that theme appears throughout the play; this may be done by discussing the theme in terms of plot, character analysis, and the recurrence of motifs and symbols in the story. Use one scholarly print source to support your argument; this may be another opinion written on the play that agrees with you, or maybe one that doesn’t and your counter argument against it. Some possible source options will be provided for you on Blackboard.

Essay Requirements:

• Essay should be 3 full pages in length + Works Cited Page
• MLA Format – 12 point Times New Roman Font, double spaced, 1” margins, and all citation should be in MLA format (See Purdue OWL). Proper In text-citations for the play and scholarly source are worth 5 possible points, and Works Cited are worth another 5. That is the difference of a letter grade, so please double check you are correctly citing all sources, the play and your scholarly source. Citations should include Author’s last name and page number. For example:

• One scholarly source properly cited in text and on the Works Cited page (a book or journal article that has been peer reviewed). Quote or paraphrase the source in your essay and cite it.
• Write in the literary present tense and in 3^rd person.

Tips:

• Your essay necessarily cannot just consist of plot summary.
• Be sure to properly punctuate the title of the literary work. Shorter works, such as short stories, poems, song titles, articles, single episodes of television shows, and one-act plays go in quotations marks (“Boys and Girls” by Alice Munro). Longer works, such as plays that are longer than one act, novels, entire television series, films, should be italicized (A Raisin in the Sun by Lorraine Hansberry).
• Your essay should necessarily quote, paraphrase, or summarize elements of the story as support for your argument and be properly cited (MLA).
• Your essay should be written in present tense when illustrating the events available in the novel, book or article.
• Formally written essays should be written in 3^rd person (he, she, they), not 1^st (I, me, or 1^st plural, we, our),and definitely not 2^nd(you, your/commands with implied you as subject of the sentence).
• A quick and concise introduction paragraph should be added for the clear understanding; it should NOT summarize the entire story in extensive detail, but it should quickly let the reader know necessary details that are important for understanding the essay.
• All sources should be introduced in your paper, all quotations should be integrated into sentences, and all facts and quotations should be cited with in-text citations. No floating quotes/standalone quotes. With print sources, in-text citations are typically the author’s last name and the page number—as in (Smith 12)—except when the author’s name is already given in the sentence; in that case and in the case that your essay is about a single source, you only give the page number. Always tell us who is “talking” in the sentence with the fact or quotation: no floating quotes! Keep in mind that failure to cite facts and the words of others is a form of plagiarism.
