Education is a key that opens all lock doors. Imagine someone without access who is trying to unlock or open a door rather than someone who has access. One will struggle while the other manages the key without any problems. The same is true with an officer with higher education than the other with primary, secondary education (High school). Will not respond to different scenarios than an educated officer with either an associate, bachelor’s, or master’s degree. If I were a police chief, I would require higher education for entry-level positions or promotions. According to Richard Rosenfeld, Thaddeus L. Johnson, and Richard Wright (2018), are College-Educated Police Different? A Study of Stop, Searches, and Arrest. They mention that the President’s Task Force on 21st Century Policing was appointed by the former president Barrack Obama suggested.
A prominent theme running throughout the Task Force’s final report is that reforms should be adopted to make policing more just, impartial, unbiased, and sensitive to the needs of diverse communities. One recommendation to achieve those objectives was that the Federal Government, state, and local agencies, should encourage and incentivize higher education for law enforcement officers (para.2).
In my opinion, a higher educated officer can respond to a challenging situation differently and more logically than an officer who is not. I live in Florida, where the communities are diversified almost at every different city. I experienced a local police officer traffic stop and a sheriff deputy traffic stop (who obtained a bachelor’s in criminal justice). Both stops were the same guy, exact vehicle, and same situation, and both officers responded differently. Dora Mekouar (2020) stated that “The majority of U.S. law enforcement agencies — more than 80% — require only a high school diploma, according to a 2017 study ( Mekouar, 2020). Officers for some of these agencies that require a high school diploma may only see the outside world or society as a danger zone as the higher education officer may see it as whom can I help to protect and serve today. Law enforcement is a dangerous job, but that should not be the mentality you start your day of work with. Agencies have to consider that just one officer can tarnish whole law enforcement as a whole. The field of policing can either be a job to some individuals or a profession. The difference is that a job is a position held in society to earn a living or money, which is never consistent. A career is specialized training with an educational background with more entirety to grow (Reddy, 2020). For an officer to be a professional, they would have to have an academic environment. If a higher -education is not provided, it should not be called a professional; with years of experience, they can be advanced. Still, professionalism does not come with only the title but with the action and training behind it. James Dudley and Joel Shults (2020) explains how a higher educated officer will benefit the policing field with aspects and the evolution in our society.
Today’s law enforcement professionals require the ability to read people, data, technology, and forensics. An advanced understanding of social and psychological influences is needed to be an expert in policing. Higher education better prepares officers for what they are being asked to do in law enforcement today (para.6).
In our society that is continuously upgrading and moving forward, education will help officers maintain and situate different challenges present in the force.
