Technology has been around for many years and is used on a day-to-day basis. The growth of technology usage in the last decades has grown by millions. Computers, tablets, and cell phones are popular to ages as early as 1 and that is getting earlier and earlier as we speak. As technology grows and more devices and programs are being made school systems are starting to include technology in their curriculum and making each department use some sort of video game or programs for helping students participate in everyday learning. Electronics introduced to children at a young age may cause cognitive development problems, so these children should be reading more books and getting their hands on learning just as the latest generations did because you should not need video games to learn your basic schooling.
Education in schools have always been about books, hands on learning and interaction with others but the generations today don’t have that luxury much anymore. Schools today have been introducing technology more to children and basing their curriculum on video games trying to see if children will become more focused in their studies this way. The children have become lazy, even more less focused and can’t be held accountable for anything. With the pandemic that has hit the world recently we had to count on the technology usage for the children to get back into schoolwork someway. Yet still it’s different as they start to go back to in-person learning because now they are in school for short period of time then home on computer doing more work. Kids spend about 4 hours on zoom and another 3 trying to do homework on the computer with little to no breaks in between. On top of all the schoolwork they do on a computer, they go home and spend however many hours on their tablets or gaming consoles. An article about Educational games stated “Some teachers feel that classroom necessities like books should be put before video games. Books and reading can provide a calmer aspect of learning rather than constant technological productivity. Books also offer better learning in the subject of English, with learning how to respond to texts, write essays and increase vocabulary, whereas a game focuses otherwise”. Not giving the children hands on learning can make learning complicated for them to realize what is real and fake in these gaming situations. Studies have stated that gaming could cause cognitive developmental issues early on. As mentors to these children, we should be giving our absolute best and teaching them in other ways that can grow their learning in all aspects of education. Also found in this article on educational games is that “The skills learned may be overlooked or forgotten when tested. The fundamental level of learning in video games may be discarded by some students, leading to poor results.” Video games causing poor results in testing and other skills is another thing that should be talked about more. Although there are games on writing, math and even science your children still are not receiving the best education they are promised while glued to a screen. In addition, studies have shown the more video games children play could lead to behavior and aggression issues in school or at home.
Addiction and aggression are not talked about enough when discussing video games and what damage they may cause. It’s known to say that video game addiction is an impulsive control disorder that doesn’t have to come with using a drug. “Addiction appears to be a problem in less than 10 percent of players, but experts have not formed a consensus on how to define or diagnose the condition, often known as Internet gaming disorder.” Video gaming is a virtual online role-playing game that can come with losses and bullying. An article I have found have said that video gaming at such a young age can cause addiction because playing for so long with virtual people may cause someone not want to talk face to face fearing of rejection. Researchers have said that “Aggression has been an ongoing concern” but, still its not something anyone mentions when giving children a technology device to “learn” on. Video game addiction is also referred to as video game overuse or pathological use of computer games and video games. With the growing rate of addiction and aggression in video games we should also be concerned about the mental and physical health of these children and what it is doing by affecting them socially and mentally every day.
Isolation is when you are separating yourself from something or someone to be alone in your own safe zone. Children in their room playing games with their headphones on is their own safe zone and somewhere to go to get away from the world. With distance learning now children are in rooms all day doing daily zoom classes, video games and online homework. Their brains are watching some sort of technology screen for about 8 hours a day or more. While researching I found that some kids stay in their room that whole time without leaving for food, water, or a bathroom break. Their minds are stuck to these screens playing games all day without opening a book or hands on learning. Children do not come out of rooms or talk to anyone in the time they start playing and it is affecting them causing them to become anti-social. “Too much time playing video games can make children socially isolated. They may spend less time on other activities like homework, reading, sports, and even interaction with the family.” This generation of children have become lazy and not wanting to be a kid the way older generations did. Growing up technology wasn’t the way it is now. My generation we were outside all day and hated when we would have to come inside at night or at a certain time, we loved to get dirty, go hang out at the neighbors or just be a kid. Now walking down a street we see 6-year-olds playing video games on mom or dad phone. Or often when coming to a family party you ask where your little cousin is and parents say, “oh he stayed home he is glued to a Fortnite game.” We are creating lazy children and it may affect the way they work one day or even their future in education. It is said that children who become video game addicts often become obese as a child and have trouble losing the weight as they grow up. Video game addiction can lead to loss in motivation in schoolwork and home life and relationships with others. We need to hold ourselves accountable and realize this generation needs the old habits like reading books, going for a walk, and playing with others.
Although technology in school may seem like a great idea let’s not forget it isn’t about what we as educators and parents want for these children it’s about what these children deserve for the education and future. The children’s development is more important than risking their mental and physical health on video games for learning. Questions we should be asking ourselves, is adding all this screen time going to benefit them in the future and what are the exact benefits these games give your children by spending hours of each day on them? “A child’s cognitive development may get affected if he doesn’t get out and socialize in the real world. Constantly sitting in one place and playing video games at length can increase the chances of obesity, weaken the muscles and joints, make hands and fingers numb due to over-exertion, and multiple studies suggest that it can even weaken the eyesight.” Something to think about is do we want to raise lazy children because they couldn’t open a book. Then to have the next generation be glued to screens 24/7, have addiction problems or even become abusive to others or themselves.
