Immigration in the United States
Immigration is one of the most outstanding controversial issues of our present time, and at the same time, it has played a significant role in American history. This concept has various sides, and regardless of one’s origin, most views on immigration are worrying. Several immigrants lead lives that many read about in books. It should be noted that there was a time when America encouraged open immigration with attempts of filling the empty lands. This was before the era of rapid transportation and communication. The relationship between the United States and Mexico is very long. The history started back in 1835 when a Mexican territory (Texas) declared its independence, and after a decade, it was annexed to the United States (Cornelius, 2006). This contributed to conflicts between the two countries resulting in the Mexican war. After the war, most of the lands that belonged to Mexico, such as California, Texas, Nevada, Wyoming, New Mexico, Colorado, Utah, and some parts of Arizona, were acquired by the United States.
This land acquisition contributed to several Mexican populations in the United States. On the other hand, the Gold Rush in California brought in more immigrants, and others joined later on with prospects of making a living (Cornelius, 2006). Some of the Mexicans came through invites as signed in the treaty during the Second World War, which temporarily allowed them to occupy agricultural jobs. When the programs ended in 1964, almost 5 million Mexicans had entered the United States (Cornelius, 2006). This number was far exceeding the set number for permanent legal immigrants. As a result, legal immigration that had increased was then checked. However, without having to cross oceans like those in Asia and Europe, illegal immigrants started to pour in at a very high rate. Statistics made in the 1980s indicated that immigrants from Mexico contributed to 55 percent of all undocumented immigrants in the United States (United Nations Population Division, 2013).
For over the years, the American government has cracked down. They have constructed high metal walls and barbed wire fences along the long border. According to Malaga (2007), several raid attempts for various businesses employ illegal workers for low wages. Ideally, such companies degrade immigrants because they make them work for many hours and pay them pennies without even providing insurance packages. On the other hand, they make them experience poor standards of living. According to Davidson (2007), a significant number of immigrants are not aware of their rights. Despite that fact, many of them continue to come through means that sometimes put their lives at risk. As they make it to the United States, they ensure that they maintain ties with their families back in Mexico, which few immigrants manage to do.
Malanga (2007) asserts that immigration has been there for years, and there is no proof that it will end soon. Immigrants come into the United States from different parts of the world. Several reasons influence them to come; some come for obtaining better education, others come seeking fortune. Others come with nothing, and they want to get a living from there, which is valid for most immigrants from Mexico as their country is facing high poverty rates (Rauch, 2007). It should be noted that many of those that come to the United States fail to fulfill the dream of living a life they dream of. This might be because most of the businesses in the country only exploit foreign workers, meaning that it becomes hard for them to make a reasonable earning. According to Gitis & Varas (2016), many companies target young women and men hungry to obtain high-paying jobs in the United States and then charge them abnormal visa fees, not permitted by American immigration laws. Even after paying the exorbitant expenses, some workers do not get their visas, and others do not get the jobs they want.
Immigrants who manage to go back to Mexico leave their families with gifts and money. Malanga (2007) asserts that millions of dollars are being transported from the United States into Mexico daily through illegal immigrants. There are efforts by the Border Patrol against this act, where many illegal immigrants are caught and confiscate all their belongings and then deported back to their country. Rauch (2007) asserts that it becomes a challenge to do away with them because of a large number of these immigrants. Ideally, these sheer numbers cannot be merely moved back to their various countries of origin. Even though using force to remove them is possible, it would appear unethical if they are chased from America. Consequently, in a country where a significant number of the population are immigrants, denying opportunities to potential Americans who would want to reach their dream would be a betrayal of this country’s principles (Rauch, 2007). Therefore, deporting immigrants should only be exercised on those that pose a threat to the nation’s security.
Many people in America come due to inadequate employment opportunities, and others come because of instability in their countries of origin. It can be observed that after reaching America, many of them benefit from being part of this country. In many instances, individuals are fooled that they are taking them to America for a short time and instead use them for different tasks since they can work for a minimum pay compared to those already living there. Comparing America with other countries, America offers employment opportunities to newcomers, such as refuge for persecution and insecurity and employment (Gitis & Varas, 2016). Notably, most immigrants tend to naturalize after enjoying life, just as the general wealth and prosperity. On the other hand, many businesses in America also benefit from immigrants’ flux. This is because most of these immigrants are young men and women seeking sources of income to look after their families. Unlike other Americans, the immigrants can even work in occupations that are considered less paying or overly taxed.
Many people assert that illegal immigrants consume or exploit the wealth of America. Many individuals and organizations, such as the Colorado Alliance for Immigration Reform, accuse unlawful immigrants of orchestrating a “massive transfer of wealth from America essentially from America’s displaced working poor to Mexico” (Preston, 2013). This means that taking employment opportunities that American citizens could perform, these poor immigrants are falsely accused of exploiting America’s wealth. Ideally, people who make such accusations lack knowledge regarding the power of free markets. In case any American or American company decides to employ an illegal workforce, it becomes their benefit because they become productive for relatively cheap labor. Therefore, an American citizen cannot compete with minimum wage laws in force.
Allowing such acts is considered a discriminatory practice, and this is referred to the era of Jim Crow discrimination that targeted mainly Hispanic workers. Similarly, having or using cheap labor sometimes helps the country in the long run as they start producing more affordable products for the consumers. It should be noted that when all illegal workers in America are hunted down and take back to their countries of origin, the business and other production sectors will be forced to hire expensive workers with high salaries (Preston, 2013). As a result, the production will also increase costs, thereby producing costly goods and services. This could primarily affect the mainly the agricultural and service industries. Therefore, demand and supply would be warped by an effective intervention in the private sector, and the middle class would pay for it.
Regardless of political leaning, a few people would say that immigration was a bad thing to do in America. Ideally, immigration is considered a positive phenomenon in America’s history because it provided the country with more hands to establish significant tasks. According to Rauch (2007), many increasing illegal immigration cases in America simply because there is a great difficulty for these people to become full citizens. There are immigration quotas imposed, and they have played as a barrier for people to enter legally into America. In other words, these quotas promote the ongoing risky business of illegal immigration. Despite the number of imposed quotas, the business of illegal immigration will not be stopped (Preston, 2013). The most common drivers of immigration are that America provides security, stability, and prosperity that many other countries do not offer. Therefore, the burden of immigration on America is only because it is powerful with a good welfare state.
Farmers burned through $13,600 on immigrant accommodation; food processors arrived at the midpoint of $37,700. Concerning expenses of selecting immigrant laborers, many producers spent nothing, and a half spent a normal of $6,400. Essentially all food processors detailed selecting costs, averaging $10,328 (Preston, 2013). Producers and food processors held different perspectives on a few transient-related issues, as uncovered in a mail study to managers. Were immigrant works inaccessible, farmers said they would probably close their business, go into different professions, or sell their property or gear. Be that as it may, most food processors, confronted with the nonattendance of short work, demonstrated they would probably motorize. However, a couple of producers, a large portion of the food processors, said that they would raise wages to draw in nearby specialists where immigration work inaccessible.
The immediate expenditure of assets by and on migrants, re-spending, was found to bring about an expected $14,856,000 of added pay to American organizations and occupants every year and the formation of 417 occupations (Cornelius, 2006). The majority of these business and pay effects of the traveler labor force were gotten from direct spending by migrants. Furthermore, “extraordinary buys, for example, sound systems, cars, tires, and furniture by migrants added up to $750 for the season for single laborers and $1,117 for laborers with families. The financial examination was utilized to gauge the backhanded or re-spending effects of transient buys. The American immigration labor force’s presence prompted over $8,700,000 being added to burden incomes for the state and nearby governments in 2001 (Malanga, 2007). Many of these extra expense incomes (about $7,229,000) originated from the government gives that have both immediate and optional impacts on nearby economies.
America’s 1977 immigrant law, which is still in actuality, gives various shields to both the business and the worker (Malanga, 2007). It incorporates the necessity for a work contract marked by both the company and the worker. This ensures the explicit beginning and end dates and a settled-upon wage. On the off chance that the business gives lodging, it likewise necessitates that lodging is examined for different wellbeing and security guidelines before it is involved and again during the collect season. Numerous companies discover the prerequisites of the law difficult. Almost 50% of the two producers and processors felt it negatively affected their business (Gitis & Varas, 2016). Generally, in any case, accept that the requirement for quick work is expanding in America. Without sufficient graceful immigrant labor, cultivators said they would probably close their business, go into different professions, or sell their territory or gear. Food processors, nonetheless, would probably automate to diminish handwork or raise wages to pull in more nearby work.
In conclusion, immigration is a major problem in the United States and because of many immigrants it has become a challenge to do away with them because of a large number of these immigrants. Even though using force to remove them is possible, it would appear unethical if they are chased from America. As a result, in a country where a significant number of the population are immigrants, denying opportunities to potential Americans who would want to reach their dream would be a betrayal of this country’s principles. Many people in America come due to inadequate employment opportunities, and others come because of instability in their countries of origin. It can be observed that after reaching America, many of them benefit from being part of this country. Therefore, deporting immigrants should only be exercised on those that pose a threat to the nation’s security.
