Nutrition: Journal Article Critique
The title of the article I researched was “Dietary intervention for blood pressure control: a call for action!” and was found from the archives of The American Journal of Clinical Nutrition. The study was performed by YP Lee and Pao-Hwa Lin through the Department of Medicine at Duke University Medical Center in Durham, NC. The study was observed among 74 overweight or obese adults. The authors replaced 40% of the flour in the focus group’s diet with the special lupin kernel flower. The modest decrease of 3-mm Hg actually decreases the mortality rate of strokes by 8% and coronary heart disease deaths by 5%. The authors realize that even a small change to our diets is hard to sustain, so ways to implement the lupin kernel flour are being explored.
I feel that the study was valid and for the most part well executed. The subjects were closely monitored for 16 weeks and were required to consume at a minimum 15-20% of their daily energy intakes from white bread or bread with lupin kernel. The study mainly included subjects whose existing dietary intakes were very close to those recommended by the D.A.S.H. diet and could have been improved by including people whose BMI was over 30 and had irregular eating habits. This would have given a better representation of the average American with hypertension issues and would have yielded higher numbers for sure.
The urgency of the research centers on the fact that two-thirds of American adults need assistance in treating or preventing hypertension.
