Guidelines for Final Projects – Research Papers

 

1. Introduction

The research paper will give you the opportunity to reflect critically and extensively on some aspect of Christianity’s relationship to the visual arts. You will use the research subject you described in the Final Project Proposal as the basis for your research paper. You may continue to refine the subject as you work, but the final paper should be related directly both to your original subject and the general theme you selected.

 

2. Requirements

While there is no specific research question or topic that you must use, you will need to structure your paper effectively so as to demonstrate your understanding of issues and ideas related to your topic. The successful paper will address the following four points:

 

• describe, with appropriate explanation and elaboration, the problem, issue, or question related to your subject;
• analyze different views which address the problem, issue or question;
• evaluate the views you analyzed, pointing out strengths or weaknesses of each; and
• present your own point of view and defend it logically.

 

You will use your sources in order to help you address each of these four points. You will need to use sources which provide background to your topic, provide evidence for your position, and engage with the argument presented by papers which are contrary to your point of view.

 

3. Formatting

All papers must conform to the Chicago Manual of Style, 16^th Edition, and students must make use of the style correctly and consistently; students may use footnotes, endnotes, or parenthetical notes, but should use only one of the three options. Students not familiar with the Chicago Manual of Style will find a sample of citations at http://www.chicagomanualofstyle.org/tools_citationguide.html.   Papers must be typed in Times or Times New Roman with one inch margins and 10-12 point fonts. Students are required to use 1.5 or double spacing for all pages, except the footnotes/endnotes and bibliography. The successful paper should be between 3,000 and 3,500 words in length (ten to twelve pages, double spaced), exclusive of notes or bibliography. Failure to include a bibliography is considered a serious defect for the paper, though it is not required to be annotated. All papers must clearly have the name of the student marked at the top of the first page (if not using a title page) and numbers for all pages (with the exception of the first page).

 

4. Acceptable Sources

Students will be required to select a minimum of eight (8) sources for the paper. While most sources available to you in the Thomas Cooper Library will be acceptable, there are several sources which may not be used because they are insufficiently detailed or lack appropriate nuance.  Unacceptable sources include, but are not limited to:

 

• an encyclopedia
• blogs, webpages, or other content only available on the internet; thus, Wikipedia violates two of the restrictions. NOTE: peer-reviewed scholarly journal articles located using a, scholarly resource (e.g., Google scholar), or journal website are NOT considered content available only over the internet, even if the journal itself is only published online.
• texts which are primarily devotional in character.
• newspaper or magazine articles (e.g., TIME or The New York Times).
• the Bible or other religious text (religious texts may be used, but cannot be counted as one of the required sources).

 

Students will find that they want to consult scholarly journal articles, and for that reason students will want to consult the electronic journals resources.
