Late Assignment Policy

Late work is strongly discouraged. Turning in work late can impair your chances of success in your course. However, Chamberlain University understands that life and emergencies do happen, and we do provide a late policy to account for emergencies and late work.

Students are expected to submit assignments when they are due. Assignments submitted after the due date in non-emergency situations will incur a penalty of a 5% deduction per day (of total possible assignment points), up to 7 days late. After 7 days late, no credit can be earned.

Non-emergency situations may include, but are not limited to:

  • work and/or family obligations
  • vacations
  • minor illness
  • computer or internet problems
  • other personal reasons that may interfere with the student’s ability to submit assignments by the due date

Note:

  • Students are responsible for having a working computer and reliable internet access with a back-up plan should the computer or internet fail.
  • Late discussion posts are not accepted for credit in non-emergent situations beyond the week in which the discussion is assigned.
  • Late exams and quizzes are not accepted for credit in non-emergent situations.

Emergency Situations

In the event of an emergency situation that prevents timely submission of an assignment, exam/quiz, or discussion, students may contact their instructor to request a waiver of the late submission penalty. The instructor will review the student’s rationale for the request and consult with their Associate Dean to make a determination based on the merits of the student’s request. Students should continue to attend class, actively participate, and complete other assignments while the request is pending.

Emergency situations may include, but are not limited to:

  • hospitalization
  • serious illness
  • military service obligation
  • natural disaster
  • death or serious injury/illness of an immediate family member

In the event a waiver is granted, the instructor will provide the student with a revised due date for the missed work.

Note:

  • Late discussion waiver: If a student is granted a waiver on a discussion for emergent circumstances, the student should submit a one page paper for each missed discussion. The paper needs to answer the original discussion question, follow all content/reference/citation instructions in the original discussion, and include a brief summary of the other students’ discussion posts and/or key themes brought up in the discussion. The discussion paper should be emailed to the faculty directly for grading, not posted in the online classroom. If the student was able to post once in the discussion during the week, they need to copy/paste the original post into a Word document and then write a summary of the discussion from their classmate’s posts. This should total one page. The paper will be graded using the rubric normally utilized for grading.

Due Dates for Assignments and Exams

Unless otherwise specified, the following applies.

  • Access to the course begins on Sunday at 12:01 a.m. (MT) during preview week.
  • All assignments are to be submitted on or before Sunday at the end of the specified week that they are due by

All academic assignments, including papers, exams, projects, and in-class assignments must be the original work of the individual student unless otherwise specified by the instructor. Academic or clinical dishonesty are exceptionally serious offenses and may result in a failing grade on an assignment, failure in the course, or dismissal from the College.
