Rough Draft of BLM

Black Lives Matter began as a hashtag. It was an activist movement, which started after Trevor Martin, a teenager from African American, died. His death occurred as a result of being shot by George Zimmerman, who was a police officer. He not only shot but also killed the tin, thus was subjected to trial. This happened in Florida, July 2013. He was released after the acquisition and thus promptly created the hashtag movement in the social media podiums.  The campaign was meant to advocate and protest against police brutality and racial violence against the blacks. Therefore, this paper will analyze the impacts, roles, and strategies the movement played to address the issue of police brutality together with racial injustices that were done to the black people.

Police brutality refers to violence or misconduct by the police. It is a situation whereby the police use excessive force towards black people and violate their civil rights. Racial injustices deny constitutional rights to a person, and the disclaimer is based upon their skin color. (Atkins, 2018)In this case, Trevor Martin is denied the right to live because he is an African American.

BLM has extensively utilized social media platforms to pass its message. In the 21st century, social media has dramatically demonstrated growth potential in sharing, promoting, and engaging the largest audiences in all different aspects of life. The movement started online when Alicia Garzia, the co-founder, shared the hashtag ‘#Black Lives Matter.’ This was after the murder of Trayvon. (Freeburg, 2017) the BML, having taken the initial standpoint on social media, has continuously been dependent on social platforms to blow-out its message. The platforms are especially Facebook, Instagram, and Twitter. In the last few days, it’s evident all through the media that people are passing information about police brutality through their mobile phones. There is ultimately unfiltered freedom in social media that makes it the most effective source to depict racism existing today.

The movement applied various strategies. First, they depicted new images frequently, of the protestors staring into the police eyes unflinchingly. This strategy is used to exemplify the refusal of submitting to police intimidation passively.  Nicholas Mirzoeff, a theorist of visual culture, described looking as addressing the forces to see anything there is to grasp, not to be traumatized but to be vulnerable. The obstinate looking has long carried a symbolic power to the black people, that historically creating eye connection with the police force posed a deadly threat. The police gaze was subverted by another tactic, a performance of the “mirror casket” art piece. It was created by artists and organizers of BLM in 2014. It aimed at provoking sympathy for the black fatalities who encountered the police assassinations. The Protestors carried a coffer covered with fractured mirrors to Ferguson’s police department from Michael Brown’s assassination site. This forced the forces to look back and realize how complete error looked like to the Black communities.

A black counter gaze was proposed by philosopher George Yancy that centered on the “Black Lived Experiences” as well as saw further than the indiscernibility of whiteness.  The stand stare challenged the traditional practices and norms that made whiteness seem normal, regular, and white.  The “Mirror Casket” presentation gave back to the police and others the problem of racism to fix. The BLM held protests across cities like Bristol, London, and Manchester. The movement is working on embracing the 10/10/10/20=50 States’ strategy, which is litigating, negotiating, and advocating for change in places where life and policy collide (Yoganathan,2020). The process was meant to protest the law on same-sex marriage. Ten states opposed the entire wedding, the other 10 for civil unions, ten more for recognition law for a same-sex relationship, and the additional 20 repealed discriminatory laws against the LGBTQ community members.

The movement had some roles which hit was working to accomplish. The movement worked on diversity. They were committed to acknowledge, celebrate and acknowledge differences. The dual role was on restoring justice. The movement committed to lovingly, courageously, and vigorously work for justice and freedom of the black people, together with all people by extension. Third, they committed to building up the black woman to flee her from male-centeredness and sexism. Fourth, they worked on globalism. To see the black people as part of the global and appreciate their roles in the globe. Fifth, the movement worked on the collective value, the fact that the black people were of value.  Sixth, the movement played a role in dismantling the patriarchal practices that kept the Black women silent. They committed to making the black people’s space to be more friendly and to enable parent’s full participation with their children. . (Arora, 2018)  The seventh role was to embrace transgender, affirming that all sisters and brothers would participate and lead. Eighth, they committed to practicing empathy. In this, also engage the comrades to connect and learn about their contexts.  The ninth role was on fostering a collaborative and intergenerational network free from ageism. They believed that people of all ages would show up and lead. The tenth role was a commitment to disrupt the family structures, which were Western prescribed as nuclear families, and create an extended family and villages to support and collectively care for each other. The eleventh role was to plan unapologetically. To desire and to love justice and freedom for the blacks and also for others.  The twelve positions were to have loving engagements with each other.  To practice and embody liberation, justice, and peace in all their arrangements.

The BLM has some impacts, cultural and political. The movement focused on eradicating white supremacy and building up the native power, aiming to intrude in the violence imposed on the black societies. (Adewale, 2015)The movement helped shift the way leaders responded to acts of violence that were highly publicized and the national conversation about policing. The BLM has networked with the Black Lives Movement and fought for the Breath Act proposal that demanded leaders to redirect funds to community services from the law enforcement forces. In social media, BLM has functioned well for the blacks as a catch-all in putting efforts on anti-racism. The movement has successfully had millions of people expressing the race effects on Twitter and Facebook, which is an outstanding achievement, having raised an international conversation. The world has been quick to recognize BLM as a force of change.

In conclusion, the BML movement effectively utilized street demonstrations and Facebook and Twitter under the hashtag to campaign against racial violence and police brutality in the U.S.
