The purpose of this paper is to analyze three werewolves in Module 8:  Anna of Tanith Lee’s “Wolfland”; Will Randall in the film Wolf; and the boy Robin in Torill Thorstad Hauger’s Varulven og Iselin, highlighted in the article “The Reinvention of Lycanthropy in Modern Fantasy Literature,” by Weronika Laskiewicz.  (Note that, for this last werewolf, Robin, you need only read the article; it provides a solid synopsis of Robin and his plight.)

In your analysis, include as many of Perkowski’s 10 points as you deem pertinent to your exploration of these werewolves (at least five per werewolf).  Also consider the idea of “embracing the gift”—how does each embrace the gift of the wolf?  Which elements of their humanity do they lose in so doing?  Which elements of the wolf do they find empowering?  How do their lupine ways affect those around them?  Are they better as werewolves, or as humans?

In a very brief conclusion, rank the three in order of most human to most lupine; briefly defend your ranking.

Paper Guidelines

The minimum word-count for this assignment is 500 words; the maximum word-count is 650 words.

Ideally, you will structure your paper as follows.

  1. A brief introductory paragraph, which contains a clear thesis statement outlining your argument.
  2. Various body paragraphs, which make connections between the topic and the course material.
  3. A brief take on human/lupine elements as noted above and a final statement that represents the key take-away/idea from your paper. (Do not merely restate your thesis here.)

You may deviate from this structure, but the majority of the paper should draw connections between the course materials. You do not have a lot of space, so get straight to the point.

You may ONLY use the readings from this Module in your essay.

You should NOT summarize the texts or worry about re-telling ideas or a plot (if discussing a narrative); assume the reader is familiar with the texts referenced. No more than 50 words may be devoted to plot synopsis. React and respond to the materials, making connections that will lead to analysis. Any personal opinions included in the essay should be based on thoughtful analysis of the topic and the materials themselves.

Criteria for Formatting and Submission

Your analysis should include the following:

  • Be typed, double-spaced, with no changes to the margins
  • Be in Calibri 11 or Times New Roman 12 font
  • Be spell- and grammar-checked
  • Include your name, but do not put your student ID number on the paper.
  • Include the following information in the upper-left of your paper:
    • Name
    • Date
    • Course
    • Paper Topic #

  • Include a title that connects in a meaningful way with your essay
  • Be at least 500 words long.  There is an automatic -5 (out of 100) penalty for not meeting the 500-word threshold.
  • Include a word count at the end of the paper.  There is an automatic -5 (out of 100) penalty for not including a word count.

  • You do not need to include additional outside references beyond the course materials in your essay.

  • Quotes should be kept to a minimum so you can focus on analyzing and connecting ideas.

  • Papers should be uploaded in .doc, .docx, or .pdf formats.

  • Papers submitted as faulty / error files like as .odt or .pages papers will NOT be accepted for credit.

  • Your paper should be uploaded to the D2L Assignments folder entitled “Essay 3” by no later than 11:59 p.m. Mountain Standard Time on Sunday, May 2.

Grading

All papers will be reviewed using Turnitin.com (via D2L) and assessed according to the rubric below.

Violations of UA Code of Academic Conduct

All papers are checked via Turnitin.com for plagiarism. A reminder that students are expected to adhere to the UA Code of Academic Integrity as described in the UA General Catalog.

See http://deanofstudents.arizona.edu/academic-integrity/students/academic-integrity.

Submission of plagiarized work will result in an automatic zero on the assignment. If you are suspected of plagiarism, you will be asked to meet with the course instructor, per UA guidelines. Your instructor will follow UA guidelines as outlined: https://deanofstudents.arizona.edu/student-rights-responsibilities/reporting-violation

Review the rubric below for elements the graders will be looking for (this is the same as for other essays this semester).  Do note that this is the last essay of the semester.  You may use a life ticket on this essay only if you have not yet claimed a life ticket.  Any students claiming a life ticket will have to submit the essay by 72 hours after the original deadline, i.e., by 11:59 p.m. on Wednesday, May 5.  No exceptions here—May 5 is the last day of regular classes in Spring 2021.
