SONA RESEARCH PARTICIPATION
Due no later than 11:59 PM on FRIDAY, APRIL 30th
If you wish to participate in research studies currently be conducted through Sona at ETSU,
computer sign-up for the studies in which you may participate are located at http://
etsu.sona-systems.com. After you create a username and password, you may browse
through the studies being offered and sign up for different studies and/or sign up to complete
alternative assignments. Information about each can be found below.
INSTRUCTIONS FOR PARTICIPATION IN RESEARCH STUDIES THROUGH SONA
Below is important information about participating in Sona research studies:
1) Participation in Sona studies must be completed by 11:59pm on Friday, April 30th.

also see the Sona Participant User Manual posted to the D2L site for this course.
2) There is a penalty for not showing up for a scheduled appointment to participate in a research
study. After two unexcused no-shows, you will no longer be allowed to participate
in Sona studies throughout the remainder of the term (including online studies)
and will have to complete the research alternative assignment for your course. As a
result, you should cancel your appointment ahead of time, if you are able. If you are not able
to do so on Sona, you should email the researchers conducting the study to cancel your appointment
ASAP.
3) If you are under 18 years of age, it is unlikely that you will be able to participate in
studies on Sona as few researchers get IRB approval to collect data from individuals under
the age of 18. If you are under the age of 18 and will not turn 18 during the course of the
semester (or not until the very end of the semester), you should complete the alternative
assignment / extra credit for your course.
4) New studies are added to Sona throughout the term. As a result, you should check
Sona regularly throughout the term for new studies in which to participate. You
should also know that when studies are posted and available on Sona but all time slots are
full, students will not be able to see those studies at that time. Many researchers at ETSU
who conduct lab-based studies using Sona participants do not post time slots more than 2
weeks in advance (as students tend to forget about their appointments if they are posted
further out) and add new time slots each week. This is another reason you should check
Sona regularly.
5) You may NOT participate in any study more than once and you cannot apply credits
earned from previous semesters to this semester.
6) For several studies on Sona, researchers manually enter Sona credits for those participants
who have completed the study (this is also true for the alternate assignment). As a

result, please wait at least 3 days to allow researchers to enter the Sona credits you
have earned by participating in a research study or completing the alternative assignment.
After that, you should email the researcher(s) in charge of that study (this information
can be found on Sona). If you still haven’t received the credit you earned and
have not received a response from one of the researchers conducting the study after a oneweek
period, please send an email to [email protected] so we can help you.
7) Should you need any assistance with Sona, please send an email to [email protected].
edu. Please note that any student sending a disrespectful or threatening email will NOT
receive a response. It is important for you to email us with legitimate concerns, complaints,
or suggestions. Do NOT, however, email us to complain about the research requirement in
general or about the number of studies up on Sona at any given time. We have no control
over either (and neither do your instructors, so please do not direct your grievances toward
them either).
8) And `inally,
WHATEVER HAPPENS IN THE LABORATORY STAYS IN THE LABORATORY
After you have completed your participation in a study, we will try to facilitate this learning
by giving you information about the experiment. That is, at the conclusion of each study,
you will receive more information about the study, which may include a description of part
of the procedure and how it was used and/or a summary of the hypotheses of the research
and the rationale for its procedures. Contact information (e.g., telephone numbers, email
addresses) will be given to you if you would like further information about the research, if
you have any questions that occur to you at a later time about the research, if you are interested
in learning more about the outcome of the research, or if you have any concerns
about the research being conducted.
Now, this is where things are important. We want to use the studies to teach you about
psychological research. To do that, the researchers who run each study will talk to you
about their study, such as what they are doing and why they are doing it. The ETSU IRB requires
them to do this because they want you to learn about psychology from your research
experiences. However, the researchers may be taking a risk (sometimes a big risk) by describing
their research. The results of their research often depend on people showing
up with no prior knowledge of what their study is about. If people who go through a
procedure tell others about it, this desirable lack of knowledge might no longer be
there and data collected may be inaccurate and compromised. Hence, there is a rule
that we want you to use in this course:

Now, this is a little extreme. In reality, there are people to whom you can speak about the
research in which you participate (e.g., your instructor, your parents, your grandparents,
your barber, etc.). In fact, if a researcher does something that makes you physically or psychologically
uncomfortable, TALK TO SOMEONE AS SOON AS IS POSSIBLE.

The rule above is really meant to discourage you from describing procedures to other
students in Psychology courses. Remember, any student who participates in a study
should do so without detailed foreknowledge of the study procedures. We are emphasizing
this rule this year because an ETSU psychology researcher did a study showing that people
did talk to each other about the studies (the researchers planted misinformation and then
assessed who entered a study with the planted misinformation). It did not happen much,
but it happened enough that it caused the researcher to be worried about it. Remember, we
are trying to make the researchers happy, and at the same time, trying our best to make the
studies educational for you. For us to achieve both of these goals, we need you to NOT DIVULGE
DETAILS ABOUT STUDIES TO OTHERS WHO MAY PARTICIPATE IN THESE
STUDIES after you are told about them. Thus, please follow this rule with respect to other
Psychology students:

Hence, please do not describe such details to people who might later sign up for the study
and participate in it (e.g., classmates, roommates, friends, family members who might also
participate). If anyone does ask about the study after you participate, ONLY SHARE
