Substance Use Portrayed in the Media
The use of drugs is a universal concern as there is an increase in the rate at which people abuses drugs. The United States is considered one of the primary targets as there are many drug users throughout the nation. One of the biggest influences out there is the media as it plays a massive part with impacting today’s society. Individuals from various parts of the world tend to believe what they read and see from the media outlets (2020). This paper explores how newspapers have impacted and portrayed drugs in the United States of America and many other Countries.
Adolescents and teenagers are the age group with the highest risk of using and abusing drugs as well as falling into addictions. According to the newspaper of a study in the US, 16% of the 1,250 teens who were researched, showed that they’ve abused alcohol and drugs by the age of 18. With that, 10% of adults are occasional drug abusers, in comparison to the 19% which could be categorized as abusers who use drugs all throughout their life. In most cases, individuals who turns out to be drug/alcohol addicts grew up abusing drugs as they started at a very young age.
According to the newspaper, opium is the highest used and abused drug currently (2021). The primary type of opium is fentanyl, a painkiller given to cancer patients and individuals with chronic conditions. There is a considerable increase in drug use, which is also contributed by the wrong prescription given to individuals. This drug quickly leads to addiction, and due to the limited resources of finding it, users have resorted to seeing them through the black market, and the consequences of this involve death.
Many drugs were invented with the main aim of using them appropriately to help manage or treat sickness, but the improper use of them leads to addiction which then causes death. The interaction of drugs and their abuse has led to many numbers of hospitalization and death cases. The main problem arises when there is a lack of regulation between doctors and pharmacists, who prescribed drugs that would have otherwise been considered not appropriate if a specialist was to be involved.
According to the newspapers and information from media outlets, there is currently a new trend where a doctor finds themselves in an awkward and uncomfortable position where they have to prescribe another dosage to a patient who got addicted to the drugs prescribed to them by the same doctor. The doctors’ main aim and focus point are to help the patients manage and treat their symptoms. Unfortunately, this leads to an addiction to some of their patients.
The doctors are now advised to explore and understand the psychological status and the risk that they might have to opium addiction before prescribing them abused drugs such as opioid painkillers. The doctors should also share other different ways and methods that relieve pain and encourage the patients not to be dependent on painkillers. The rise in deaths of people due to the use of such drugs is alarming, and concern should be raised to find solutions.
Marijuana in the year 2015 had a two-thirds report of offenses dealing with drug use and abuse. Most deaths are due to the wrong administration of drugs; safe methods to inject these drugs would be a solution to reduce the rate of deaths. Sites have been established where users can inject their drugs and supervision by medics.
In conclusion, teenagers and patients are the primary users of drugs and abusers. Prescription drugs are now common causes of death due to overuse and addiction. Fentanyl is among the most abused painkiller. Physicians and pharmacists are now part of these deals; others do it unknowingly, while others are drug dealers.
