An article by Dr. Marty Makary a surgeon and a professor at John’s Hopkins School of Medicine in Baltimore speaks up about his time as a surgeon, as surgeon, he would refer to prescribing opioids so often as to give them out like they were candy. Dr. Makary admitted that the medical community during his time as a surgeon ingrained that opioid were non-addictive and suggested to over-prescribe to avoid unexpected phone calls from patients requesting more painkillers. Surgeon mentors had conditioned Dr. Makary to overprescribe thirty to ninety opioids upon patient discharge. He included in his article research showing that patients are unaware that one in sixteen become chronic users. Also including relapse rates after opioid addiction treatment may be as high as ninety-one percent. Dr. Marty Makary claims that in 2015 he had written hundreds of disproportionate opioid prescriptions.
Dr. Marty Makary along with colleges have repeatedly conducted a study focusing on minor procedures and operations providing treatment with non-opioid alternatives. As a medical professional he believes there should be a change to the corrupt financial encouragement that is enabling doctors to avoid the concern and interest when it comes to thoroughly managing a patient’s prescriptions. Due to the little pay received the reimbursement system hasn’t been valuing professional advice or guidance regarding pain management. Dr. Makary advises that changing the incentives of overprescribing is far less costly than treating addiction rehabilitation advising us all that the most efficient treatment is prevention.
