Purpose of Essay 2
Essay 2 will help you achieve this Student Learning Outcomes for English 120: Construct logically developed essays that synthesize, integrate, and contextualize multiple outside sources (through quotations, paraphrasing, and summary) with their own voice, analysis, or position, using appropriate documentation.
Essay 2 will also give you the opportunity to apply what you have learned about rhetorical strategies to your own writing.
Topic Choices
Choose one of the following topics: (you can choose whatever you want)
the food insecurity problem for college students in the USA
the food waste problem at restaurants (or at a specific restaurant where you have worked)
the food waste problem at stores (or at a specific store where you have worked)
the food waste problem in consumers homes
the food inequality/food desert problem in the USA (or in your neighborhood, city or hometown)
Once youve selected your topic, you will learn more about this topic in our on-line class.
You will also do some research on your topic to help you write your essay.
In your essay, develop a plan for solving the food problem that you are writing about, and use various rhetorical strategies to try and convince your audience to adopt your plan of solutions.
Essay 2 Requirements
Use a variety of rhetorical strategies that you have learned this semester to convince your audience to agree with your thesis and to adopt your solutions.
Include some of your own creative solutions. I’m not looking for a “right” solution; there are so many ways these problems can be solved, so I encourage you to share your own unique ideas. It is so interesting for me to read your creative ideas and to read various points of view.
Add personal observations and even compelling personal experiences to convince readers.
To enhance your own ideas, incorporate research into your essay from the following required sources:
at least two of the sources we have read/watched in class
at least two credible sources from Grossmonts library database (here is my user name and password to access the : user: Angela.koro Pass: 092098)
at least one credible source from your google search
Let your ideas and creativity dominate the essay rather than the research. The research is just meant to enhance what you think could be done to solve the problem you’re writing about.
Organize your essay in a way that is easy for the reader to follow.
Use transitions to help the reader follow your ideas.
after any quoted or summarized material from your research.
On a separate sheet of paper include a Works Cited page at the end of your essay that lists all of the sources you cited.
Type your essay, and : 12-point font, Times New Roman font style, double-spacing, and one-inch margins.
Proofread your essay for grammar and punctuation errors.
Submit your own work. Your essay will go through a plagiarism checker called Turn-it-in when you submit it.
Introduction (1 paragraph)
Create a hook to grab your audiences attention.
Identify the problem that you are writing about.
State your thesis: your general ideas for how to solve the problem you’re writing about. (Your thesis for the draft can be general. You will work on making your thesis more specific next week.)
Background (1 paragraph)
Include at least one background paragraph. In the background paragraph, give an overview of the problem in order to convince your audience that this problem is worth caring about.
Explain some negative consequences this problem creates in society.
Incorporate into your draft information from at least two articles that you have read in our class: ( I will drag and drop the articles below so you can access them)

Body (at least 4 paragraphs)
In the body of the essay, include at least four paragraphs in which you explain your solutions to the problem you are writing about.
Here are some ideas for how to develop each body paragraph:
Identify in your topic sentence one of your solutions from your thesis.
Describe the solution.
Explain why this solution is needed.
Explain how this solution could improve the situation.
Counterargument (optional paragraph)
You could also add a counterargument paragraph in place of one of the body paragraphs and use the refuting the opponent rhetorical strategy.
First explain the opposing view (the counter argument).
Then refute the opponent and explain why the opposing argument is flawed, unfair, weak, or misguided.
Conclusion (1 paragraph)
You could summarize your most important points that you want your audience to remember.
You could make a prediction about what might reasonably happen if your audience does not adopt your solutions.
You could end your conclusion with something very powerful, something you really want to stick in your audiences mind.
