Essay Project will require you to present current research, as well as your own thoughts, on a topic related to business, economics, social science, and political science. This project is broken up into several pieces to help keep you on task. Throughout the semester you will need to complete several major milestones, including your choice of topic, a hypothesis, a literature review, an outline of the paper, a rough draft to be evaluated by your peers, and the final version of your paper. Detailed requirements for each of these milestones are available on the pages that follow, as well as in the modules in which each of them is due. The total project is worth 100 points, but each segment will be graded separately and have its own point value scoring criteria. Your page must be at least three pages, this does not include your bibliography.

In Module 8, you will select your topic for the course project as well as provide a thesis statement that indicates what you intend to research.

Below are some suggested topics for your Microeconomics Project. You do not have to choose one of these, but – at the very least – this list should help get you thinking about the types of issues you might be interested in researching.

Once you have chosen a topic, you will draft a thesis statement that clearly indicates what your topic is and what you expect your research to reveal about the topic. Please keep in mind that this is a draft of your thesis statement. It can (and should) change as you work your way through the research, outlining, drafting, and revision process.

In Module 10, you will review three scholarly articles, books and/or other sources (e.g. dissertations, conference proceedings) relevant to your topic selection and write an annotated bibliography. An annotated bibliography is an organized list of sources (may be any variety of materials, books, documents, videos, articles, web sites, etc.) with an accompanying paragraph that describes, explains, and/or evaluates each entry in terms of quality, authority, and relevance. Good research typically includes a variety of sources including scholarly materials, the popular press, documentaries, etc. I recommend using Google to search the web, including Google News for current events. Additionally, the links below may be good starting resources. NOTE: The sources you use in completing your project need to be credible.

In Module 10, you will prepare a full sentence outline that lists the main points that you want to write about your project. Review Types of Outlines and Samples from OWL, paying special attention to the Full Sentence Outlines section, as well as the Sample Outlines provided. Make sure your outline includes all of the following components:

 

1. A statement of what you intend to research.
2. A review of the current literature on the chosen topic.
3. A summation of what other authors have written or researched regarding both the economic and sociocultural impact of your chosen topic.
4. Your own response detailing what you learned about the topic after researching it. For example, were your original ideas about the topic confirmed by the research? If not, why?

 

In Module 12, you will submit a completed rough draft of the assignment to a discussion forum for review by your peers.

Everyone is expected to provide two positive comments and two suggestions for improving someone else’s rough draft. EVERYONE needs feedback, so if someone has already provided a review for a particular draft, you’ll be asked to find one that doesn’t.

Remember to provide CONSTRUCTIVE suggestions (e.g., “greater attention to detail in the reference section might improve your score”), NOT DESTRUCTIVE suggestions (e.g., “the reference section stinks”). The tone of your feedback should be collaborative and helpful. Your suggestions could include additional content or resources, relevant examples, questions, or other helpful comments. No flaming will be tolerated!

In Module 14, you will submit the final version of your essay. Prior to submitting it, you need to consider the feedback you received from your peers and decide whether or not to incorporate their suggestions into your final essay. There is no penalty for NOT making use of their feedback, but it often serves to improve your final product.

Your report is due before the last day of the semester; check the course’s syllabus or the calendar on Angel for the specific date. For those students willing to present their findings in-class you will be given a maximum of 25 extra credit points. To receive the full point allotment you should have a PowerPoint presentation, dress appropriately (Business Casual), and have a good speaker presence. You must notify me within the course shell email if you decide to present to the class.

 

Your paper is due by 11:30 pm Thursday, May 6^th.  Absolutely no late papers will be accepted.  If you run into computer issues you must submit a hard copy in my mailbox located at N-114 and it must have a timestamp that is provided by the receptionist at the same location.  The office closes at 5:00 pm M-TH.

 

 

 

 

 

 

VII. Integrity of Academic Work

Any violation of academic integrity is a serious offense for which the student will be subject to grading sanctions up to and including failure in the class involved. Grading sanctions will be administered by his/her teacher. In addition, the student may be subject to additional disciplinary action by the College.

1. No student shall cheat on an examination or other academic assignment.

No person or persons shall procure or furnish in any unauthorized manner any piece or pieces of writing, which can be shown by competent authority to contain the questions and/or answers to an examination scheduled for some subsequent date to any individual or group enrolled in any course of study offered by the College.
3. The unauthorized possession of any of the aforesaid writings shall be considered prima facie evidence of an attempt to violate the provisions of Section A.
4. No person shall allow another to take an examination or complete any other academic work on his/her behalf.
5. A person is guilty of plagiarism who fails to give credit for any ideas or material taken from another for either written or oral presentation. The offering of materials assembled or collected by others in the form of projects or collections without acknowledgment also is considered plagiarism.
6. No person shall gain entry to any records or information stored in the College’s computer system(s) other than those records specifically registered to that person’s user identification code. This includes, but is not limited to, official College records as well as information stored by another student. Tampering shall be defined as unauthorized access to records as well as the altering of information.

The following guideline regarding plagiarism was prepared by the Standards Committee and approved by the Provost.

What is plagiarism?

Plagiarism is the use of another person’s words or ideas without acknowledging that person with a citation.^[i]

A citation follows the borrowed words or ideas with a footnote, endnote or parenthesis to identify the source.

Examples of plagiarism:

1. Using another person’s exact words without citation and/or quotation marks.

 

2. Altering the words of another person, while keeping that person’s original idea intact without citation. This is called paraphrasing.
3. Using information taken from compilations of data, such as found in encyclopedias, dictionaries, almanacs, and textbooks, without identifying the source and using quotation marks if needed.
4. Use of Internet sources without citation. A source is a source whether typed on a page in a book or glowing on a computer screen. Information taken from the Internet must be acknowledged with a citation.
