His popularity within the globe and media presence makes it easier for him to reach different levels of communities. These influence ideologies are beneficial to the community and even act as the voice of those who feel that their voices are suppressed. He is a man of many coats. That is why, when people hear of Jesse Williams, different titles come to mind. Some think of him as a great actor, others view him as visionary, while others view him as a media personality who has a knack for activism. The advancement project is a non-profit organization that has two branches in Washington and California. It is an organization that is politically liberal and deals with racial justice issues. Despite all the advancements in technology and ideologies, we live in a world where racial injustice is always an issue. The globe has made significant steps towards growth and development, but racism is still an important issue. Almost every day, there is a person assorted due to their racial or ethnic group. Racism started way back in the times where minorities were seen as slaves. Even years later, after ideologies of slavery have been eradicated, groups like the black American still face racism in various sectors and areas. With people like Jesse Williams, who are well known within the communities and the globe, it becomes easier to fight against this racial issue.
Advancement Project Overview
In 1999, civil rights lawyers within Washington DC and Los Angeles formed an organization geared toward helping deal with racial justice issues. While in the beginning, it aimed at opposing the voter ID laws, over the year, their coverage issues have expanded. They have fought for things like the abolitions of school disciplinary measures, which they argued aim to push the minority stunts into the school jail pipeline. This was in line with the ideology of having police within schools who were more concerned about following and harassing the minorities within the school instead of facilitating the safety of all students. If anything, it caused feelings of insecurities for the minority students as they had to follow different rules and procedures compared to the white students. In 2018, they increased their engagement in race accounts cases. Since then, they have made it their goals to fight for equal treatment of all, even the minorities, as an activist who fights for the same things and issues that is why Jesse Williams is among those who run the organization. The organization also focuses on children’s need, especially within the two cities where they have their branches and headquarters. They ensure that children have safer neighborhoods, communities with people of color have a voice within the democracy, and the public investment programs benefit everyone, not the privileged. Generally, they are well invested in researching the different policies within the community. Those policies that they find to be oppressed conduct campaigns against them and advocate for changes within them, promoting equity. Due to this, they have to ensure that they work with the community partners so that their difference is felt and enacted within the same community. Within the organization, he can enact some changes right hand and even influence changes within different sectors.
Justice Project: COVID-19
When the pandemic hit, things as we knew them changed; people had to become accustomed to the new rules and policies. Some of them involved lockdowns and social distancing. The factors of social distance necessitate that we stay more than one meter from one another. The advancements project felt that there was a population that was not able to observe these necessities. Their conditions made it harder to stay safe amidst the covid-19 pandemic. Due to this, the organization formed the justice project that was going to advocate that those in jail be demarcated to have a fair chance to fight against the pandemic. With the conditions that they live within the prisons, there were no ways policies like social distance would help them keep safe. Even before the pandemic hit, jails being overcrowded existed, and it was among the active debate areas. The push for decongestion within the prison has been advocated for over the years. Now with the pandemic, it is a necessity that has to be followed. Williams was among the very first to speak on the matter. He led in the advocating that those in jails be let free to avoid contracting COVID-19 in jails due to the conditions they live in. “I wanna’ suggest one thing that we could be thinking about and that we could be doing… the impact of this COVID-19 pandemic on our almost 700,000 brothers and sisters around this country locked away in local jails who don’t have access to consistent running water, or soap, or certainly hand sanitizer, can’t social distance, and don’t have adequate health care … [in] jails where people are locked up for traffic tickets and unpaid fines and petty misdemeanors. Still, they don’t have the money to pay for their bail,” shared Williams in an Instagram post that he posted in April, third in 2020. His speech here was in line with what so many advocates and social influencers are pushing on. He believed that as long as the institutions could not provide the necessary resources to prevent the virus, it would cause harm within the facility and the outside community (Advancement Project National Office, 2020).Those who work within the jails facilities get to go home every day to their families; they interact with other people within the community, and if they get sick, which means that they will spread this to the rest of the community. He also went ahead to ask people to sign within a website run by the advancements project. His pleas were in line with the advancement project, and it was supported by one of their advocates who spoke on behalf of everyone else within the organization.
Additionally, he added this within his video, and it got several views, “Every minute counts. Some people are trapped … in steel and concrete cages and because they didn’t have a couple of hundred bucks. They’re human beings too. They deserve our love, empathy and attention,”. In this speech, he was fighting for those within prisons, and it did not matter what race or ethnicity his arguments here was based on those who could not post bail. While his activism is mainly in racial justice, he is a great activist on civil rights (Advancement Project National Office, 2020). With his platform as an actor and media personality, he is boosted by his involvement within the advancement project organization to push and achieve such changes. The enacted lockdowns within several counties and states, made it harder for the accused criminals to escape town. That is why, while they have to be accorded bails to get out of the jails, those with no ability to meet their bails could be released for the periods for their trials.
According to the advancement projects, 2020, the pandemic has no intentionality, yet another measure has shown how racism is progressed. One of the measures of discrimination have is residential segregation which in the time of pandemic has worked as an order on how people get resources for fighting against the pandemic. When the pandemic hit, especially within the Los Angeles, the white residential areas were hit. Still, with time, the cases have advanced within the blacks and the Latin regions of residents. Health inequality has been within the communities for a long time, and now, with the pandemic, one person’s health does ensure that the other person is safe too. With this, they advocated for the leader within the communities to make sure that the high need communities were prioritized to curb the spread of the pandemic.
Minorities live in areas where the environments are not conducive to all, and they have air pollution, among other factors that mean that their systems are more vulnerable to any health attack. At the same time, they pushed for everyone to be treated equally when receiving health care. With the research that they conducted, they found out that the cases of those affected continue increasing with the highest poverty level communities, which is made up of minorities(Maria Cabildo, et.al, 2021); this is due to factors like their living conditions and their inability to access and afford the medical care for such cases as the pandemic attack. As a search, they are pushing for the governments in both local and federal capacity to make the necessary changes to help the groups be affected. They are also working on ways to ensure that the people within this area get the essential resources. As per Maria Cabildo et al., 2021, by March 16th, 2021, the number of cases in higher-poverty areas was about 2.9 times the number in lower-poverty neighborhoods.
Racism: Everyone’s Problem
While the advancement project organization has offered Jesse Williams a chance to continue fighting for what he believes in, that is equality and calling out racism, he has been doing so in the past. One of his most outstanding and impactful activist times was when he gave his speech during the 2016 BET awards. His speech caused a lot of uproar within social Media, and it brought people to talk about the factors that were affecting the communities of a racial level (NPR Staff, 2016). In previous years like 2014, he participated in various protest, especially when the police gunned down an 18-year-old boy while he was not at fault; during that year, several young black Americans lost their lives due to police negligence and brutality. He was at the forefront of fighting for them and the justice that their families deserved. In various interviews, he has made sure to mention and point out that it is a societal issue when it comes to racism. The level of whiteness within the United States pushes the subject to seem like a black people problem, and that is where they fail (Adams, 2016). If they were to treat it as a societal issue, they could be more committed to eradicating the issue and promoting equality in all areas.

Observably, Jesse Williams is an activist who has made several impacts in society. He has managed to advocate for justice in his production and speeches within his social media platforms, especially for the minority. Together with the advancement project organization, then the civil rights of the minorities are well represented. His media personality and actor description makes it easier for him to be impactful within the community as he has many followers within his media platforms.
