Client History
This client Marieta Berdinazzi, known as Luana is a fictional character from the Brazilian telenovela – O Rei do Gado, which was written by Benedito Rui Barbosa and directed by Luiz Fernando Carvalho, and was first broadcasted on TV in 1996. (Wikipidia, n.d.).
Luana and her whole family is originally from Minas Gerais/ Brazil. Luana lost her immediate family (parents and siblings) in a car accident as they were leaving their city to try a better life in another place. Luana was saved by and taken care by a nun at a hospital, and there she was named “Luana” since client could not remember anything due to her brain trauma. Luana grew up working in the farms without really knowing who she really was, her heritage and how wealthy her family really is. She is the niece of Geremias Berdinazzi – a powerful millionaire known as “King of Coffee and Milk” from Guaxupé, Minas Gerais.(Wikepedia, n.d.)
This client is illiterate. She never had the opportunity to go to a school due to being engaged in child labor and continued to work in the same field until adulthood.
Due to the car accident, Luana was completely unconscious and could never recover her memory.
Client came in for a session at the counseling agency. The client appeared to be healthy, and clean. She seemed to be very quiet and anxious. She would touch her hands a lot. Her speech pattern was very low, had her head down for most of the time and avoided eye contact. However, eye contact improved as rapport was built towards the middle of session. Client was able to speak about her flashbacks and seemed very disturbed for not being able to connect her thoughts in order to understand her memory.
Client always worked in the farm and finds herself not working currently.
Client is heterosexual, married to a wealthy man.
Client has no history of Substance abuse.
Client reported to be catholic and believe in God. In addition, client stated that relies on her faith to face her obstacles.
Client is having a difficult time adjusting to the new way of life since she married a wealthy farm man. She feels inferior and unable to blend in. She states that it is very hard to live according to the standards of the wealthy family. Client appeared very open to discuss and work on a plan to help her adapt to the new life she finds herself in. According to client, her husband is very patient and supportive of her. He has hired a tutor to help her with etiquete and home school so she can learn how to read and write.
Presenting Problems
Personal functioning
The client – Luana – came in seeking for assistance due to having questions about her mental health. Luana started to have flashback about her past, memories that she lost after a car accident. Client stated that would like to understand what is happening with her and perhaps help her find her true identity. According to her, some memories have started to come back which includes her real name Marieta Berdinazzi, more details about the accident and some facts about her family.
Relationships
The other problem that she mentioned that she would like to work is her self-esteem and confidence. Since she is illiterate and always lived a very simple life in the farm, this client finds herself in a very uncomfortable situation having to live and behave in a wealthy environment. She feels that she is unable to meet their standards.
Spiritual Health
This client stated that relies on her faith to face her problems and believes that with His help she will be able to understand helself, her story and help her learn all the skills she needs which includes literacy and etiquete, which will lead her to be more confident.
Given the presented problems, this counselor is able to gather and organize clients’ concerns and develop a plan of action. According to the Inverted Pyramid Method (IPM) the practitioner is able to utilize this framework to illustrate connections between presenting symptoms and concerns, situations, and underlying dynamics and needs. (Schwitzer & Rubin, 2014).
As a result of session, both client and this counselor agreed that client will benefit from counseling since it is a tool that can help her work on herself and to be able to interact better with others in the higher society. In addition, it will assist in helping her understand her past in order to make better sense of her present self. According to Corey (2021), the ultimate goal of a treatment is to increase adaptive functioning, which involves the reduction of symptoms and the resolution of conflicts. (Corey, 2021).
